Friends Peace Teams Is the place where Quakers support one another’s long-term justice and peace ministries with global networks of justice and peace workers, supporters, and donors of many backgrounds, cultures, and beliefs working in the African Great Lakes, Asia West Pacific, Europe, and the Americas.
Friends Peace Teams Asia West Pacific Welcomes visitors as spiritual hospitality – to get to know one another and thereby get to know one’s self. As international visitors learn about Javanese and other Indonesian cultures, you also learn about theirs. So come as you are, but be prepared to share your culture.
Peace Place In Pati, Central Java, Indonesia, is a community learning center on a permaculture site housing and Training Center, Joglo Preschool, and a Friends Guest House. We wanted to reduce the violence left from centuries of colonization to improve vitality, health, and well-being, and realize making peace with each other and with nature go hand-in-hand. The activities are grounded in the Alternatives to Violence Project (AVP) under the care of Friends Peace Teams - Asia West Pacific.
Peace Place offers an Internship Focused on:
- Joglo Preschool: attend school five mornings a week to assist with activities for 30-35 three- to six-years-old children with four teachers, document activities, and develop materials for the Regenerative Cultures of Justice and Peace Preschool Curriculum.
- Universal Design for Learning: play with preschool children with special needs, such as autism, deafness, or hyperactivity, and help create adaptive equipment or experiences for them.
- In addition, the Indonesian interns will accompany and translate the interns from Haverford University, during the activity.
The intern will also attend the Alternatives to Violence Project - Cultures of Justice and Peace Workshop.
Schedule Week 1: Haverford and English-speaking Indonesian Intern meet with mentor on their focus.
- Week 2-3: Interfaith AVP Creating Cultures of Justice and Peace Workshop, an interactive, community- and skill-building training on power, resiliency, liberation, and consensus of conscience.
- Week 3-4: Haverford and English-speaking Indonesian Intern meet with mentor on their focus.
Most of the time will be on site with some visits to local villages.

Outcomes We encourage interns to keep a journal and portfolio to collect periodic reflections, photos of setting, activities, and themselves interacting. We expect interns to write news articles and a presentation on how they plan to continue justice and peace work upon return. Every intern is expected to share the story of your experience in news stories through speaking events at home.
Qualifications Interns must be fluent in English (spoken and written). We expect an active engagement in justice and peace in your private and public life, and a maturity for respectful relationships with local people and foreigners. You must be an independent worker, but also collaborate well with others.
Mentors Petrus is the Director of the Peace Place Training Center and Nanik is the Principal of Joglo Preschool.
Support Selected interns will receive a welcome packet with a Letter of Agreement for clarity. We will arrange an FPT Welcome Meeting, regular mentor sessions, daily work plans, and 2-3 monthly FPT Asia West Pacific Team meetings. You will be asked to complete an Internship Evaluation form at the end and attend a Farewell Meeting where you will receive a Certificate of Internship. Intern will get pocket money, free simple daily meals, activities transportations, and lodgings.
Concerns Difficulties should be raised immediately, specifically, and directly with your mentor, first in conversation, then in writing if needed. The mentor is asked to do the same for you.
